Working as a dating and relationship coach means that I read A LOT of books on how to find and stay in love. However, when I was in my 40s and newly back on the dating scene, I found the following 3 books were the most helpful to me as I searched for my Mr. Right.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by Dr. John Gottman

I first encountered John Gottman in this New York Times article. I was struggling in a relationship and his ideas were a revelation to me. When that relationship ended, I read Gottman’s book and decided to use it as a roadmap for the type of relationship that I wanted to have.

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts by Dr. Gary Chapman

Sometimes it’s the little things that create the biggest conflicts. This book helped me to understand that there are many different ways for someone to show you that he (or she) loves you. To be able to understand that my partner’s act of service is another way of saying I love you, allowed me to appreciate little acts of kindness that I might have overlooked otherwise.

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brené Brown

To be truly loved means to be truly seen. To be seen you have to be willing to reveal not only the beautiful, sexy, polished you, but also the bad-breath in the morning, legs that need to be shaved part of you as well. To be loved means to allow yourself to be vulnerable. Now, I am no big fan of being vulnerable, but Brene Brown convinced me to give it a try… and it worked!
